Description:

Soldering is a must-have skill for all sorts of electrical and electronics work. It is also a skill that must be taught correctly and developed with practice. In this first-ever combined offering, IEEE and Artisan's Asylum are coming together to offer you a course that will provide the knowledge and hand-on skills to use soldering effectively in practice.

The workshop will cover the most common types of soldering required for electronics work. This includes soldering components to printed circuit boards and soldering a spliced wire joint. Most importantly, we'll address how to effectively rework the faults that almost inevitably occur during the assembly soldering process.

Class Goals:

This course is intended for anyone who wants to gain the soldering experience needed to build electronic circuits, hobby kits, or circuit prototypes for work or play. It is an extremely useful skill to acquire if you are in the design and development of electronic circuits, circuit assembly, or just hacking circuits for fun.

Target Audience:

Design Engineers, Application Engineers, System Engineers, young professionals, and students would want to gain the knowledge and skill of soldering.

Instructor Biography:

Soon Wan graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore) as the top student with the highest merit diploma, and graduated with Summa Cum Laude in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Merrimack College (North Andover, MA). Currently, Soon is a Senior Design Engineer in the Engineering Development group at VICOR Corporation in Andover, MA. He works with a team to design and develop high power density DC/DC power converter with innovative technologies and patented topologies. He has 15 years of experience in Power Electronics: DC/DC conversion designs and topologies, high frequency switch mode power supplies, high power density converters, feedback and control theory, magnetic design, circuits simulation, and printed circuit board layout.
